HAIR LOSS TREATMENT WITH PRP
Hair loss can be caused by a variety of causes. A medical visit is often required to determine if there are medical reasons for hair loss such as anemia, thyroid disease, recent stress or trauma, or autoimmune diseases. If hair loss is genetic and related to circulating hormones, then it is called androgenetic alopecia. This type of hair loss can be treated with several modalities including oral or topical medication, hair transplant, and PRP (platelet rich plasma). While hair transplant is not offered at Trinity Vista Dermatology, we offer state of the art therapies for earlier stages of androgenetic alopecia.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is easily obtained by drawing the patient’s blood, spinning it down to isolate the platelet rich plasma in the centrifuge. This PRP contains growth factors that stimulate hair follicles. It is best used for the types of alopecia that are not scarring, namely androgenetic alopecia. At Trinity Vista Dermatology, the PRP system used is Selphyl, which helps isolate platelets without red or white blood cells into a matrix (PRFM) that gradually releases the growth factors. Several treatments may be needed to achieve results, and it should be noted that PRP treatments are considered off-label for hair loss.
